SCO TV channel prepares for launch

The presentation of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's (SCO) TV channel is planned to be timed with the SCO Council of Heads of State Meeting in Ufa (Republic of Bashkortostan), Russian State Duma Deputy Andrei Svintsov told Sputnik.

One of the TV channel's major goals is to facilitate integration with the SCO and promote business, Mr. Svintsov said. Companies representing SCO member states will serve as a key focus. Promoting new people will also be an integral element.

According to Mr. Svintsov, the TV channel's model has already been developed, with the Internet site operating in test mode, the technical facilities prepared and the studio to be built. The channel is expected to broadcast in Russian, Chinese and English via satellites and cable TV operators. The channel will be financed through advertisements.

The project was initiated by the SCO Youth Council. According to Denis Kravchenko, the Head of the Council's Russian section, the idea has long been on the agenda. The first stage of its implementation will involve launching an online channel. As it receives further content and develops, the project will also include a TV channel.

While commenting on the project, SCO Secretary-General Dmitry Mezentsev said the organisation welcomes all efforts to facilitate mutual understanding between the nations in the region.
