Resolution on cooperation between the UN and the SCO

On November 11, 2014, the 69th session of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Cooperation between the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which defines a common course of the organisations' joint work for the next two years.

The document text cites the important role of the SCO in promoting regional and global peace and sustainable development, and raising the level of mutual trust between SCO member states. The SCO's efforts to strengthen security and stability in the region and the world, and combat terrorism, extremism and separatism, drug trafficking, and other forms of cross-border crime are noted.

The resolution welcomes the SCO's activities to promote regional cooperation in areas such as trade and economic development, energy, transport, agriculture, migration management, finance and banking, information and communication technology, science and new technologies, customs, education, health, environment, and reducing the threat of natural disasters.

The text stresses the importance of further development of dialogue, cooperation and coordination between the UN and the SCO, continuing the practice of regular consultations with the SCO Secretary-General at various international venues, including through establishing and maintaining direct contacts.

The adoption of the resolution is scheduled for the 71st session of the UN General Assembly in 2016.
