UN-SCO step up cooperation

The UN General Assembly has adopted a number of resolutions to promote cooperation with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) and a number of other regional bodies.

One of the adopted resolutions states that the SCO "has become a key regional organisation for addressing a regional security issue in all its aspects."

During the presentation of draft resolutions on the SCO and the CSTO, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin said that these regional organisations are an inherent element of today's international relations. "Their efficiency on the spot is a major factor for ensuring security and facilitating trade and humanitarian ties between nations," he pointed out.

The Russian Ambassador went on to say that the SCO's purpose is to enhance mutual trust among its member states, as well as to promote cooperation on economic, educational and environmental issues, cybersecurity and in other areas.
